Wills are important

A will is amongst your most important legal documents.  At least it should be…50% of the adult population in this country do not have a will.  Are you amongst that 50%?

What no having a will means

Not having a will means:

  • Your estate will be distributed to your relatives according to the laws of intestacy, which can have quite unexpected results.
  • The likelihood of family disputes over inheritance increases.
  • Your intentions are not heard.
  • The benefit your loved one’s derive from your estate is lessened due to the burden of inheritance tax.
  • Grand children and young children may not be able to benefit from your estate.
  • You will have no say in your own funeral arrangements.
  • You will not be able to choose the executors of your estate.

Quite clearly then, there are many drawbacks to not having a will.

Disadvantage of having a will

Cost.  That’s it!  Wills are not particularly expensive.  Many types of simple will can be advised on a fixed fee basis.  The small, affordable cost of making a will is often far outweighed by the advantages they have to offer.

Already have a will?

If you already have a will, you should think about reviewing and updating it at least every five years.  However, if:

  • You get married
  • Have children
  • Acquire valuable property

…you should think about having your will reviewed sooner rather than later.
